Fire Prevention - Burn Permits
In Jefferson County, a permit from Jefferson County Public Health is required for any open burning. Permits are based on the materials to be burned and air quality consideration. Forest management burns which are generally associated with insect and disease control and forest fire prevention through hazardous fuel reduction activities are the only type of open burning that can qualify for a permit. Permits are not required for "recreational burns" such as pep-rallies and non-commercial cookouts. Burning of trash, garbage, construction debris and other man-made materials is NOT permitted in Jefferson County. OPEN BURNING IS NOT PERMITTED BETWEEN OCTOBER 31ST AND MARCH 1ST AT ELEVATIONS BELOW 6400'. Open burn permits are issued by the Jefferson County Department of Health. The Burn Permit application fee is $80. Terms and conditions of the permit will be included when the permit is issued. Open burning without an Open Burn Permit is subject to civil penalty of up to one hundred dollars per day for each day such a violation occurs.
